Retellings: Poetry Beyond Headlines and Body Counts

Work-in-progress / Spoken Word DVD Collection

Photo: Chien A. Yuan

This is a series of three spoken word videos based on the original writings of Muslim American artist Anida Yoeu Ali. The videos will be powerful works of visual art that use narrative based poetry as the primary text. The trilogy of spoken word videos continue Studio Revolt’s efforts to engage in media making projects that subvert stereotypes, strategically intervene against violence and engage in acts of social justice.  The three original spoken word poems included in this series are “1700% Project: Mistaken for Muslim,” “Who’s Got Us?” and “Haram! Haram! Haram!” The videos are conceived to be a series in which humor, politics and metaphors cooperate to complicate and humanize the image of the Muslim in America. The videos are intended to both educate the wider public and serve as timeless collaborative works of art.
